The List: Public Officials on the Boards of Innovators

The CTC applauds those who sit at the intersection of innovation and public service. These top leaders exemplify both service and the spirit of the early adopter.

3. George Schultz, former Secretary of State. Has long served on the board of Gilead Sciences and, more recently, Theranos. Schultz and his wife are among the most committed civic leaders in San Francisco’s cultural life as well, serving visibly on the Symphony, Opera, and other arts organizations.

2. Colin Powell joined the board of directors of Salesforce officially on March 14th. This follows years of special partnership with Sand Hill blue chip Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers.

1. Janet Napolitano, President, University of California system. The former Secretary of Homeland Security now sits on the largest collection of major research universities in the country. Asked on a panel whether she should be called “Governor” or “Secretary” at a conference on civic innovation, she answered simply, “Janet.”
