Counterpoint: Don't Burn The Boats

Our Book of the Month this month is Burn The Boats. Angel investor Matt Higgins reveals the counterintuitive formula for a life of perpetual growth that has been practiced for thousands of years by military leaders and serial entrepreneurs alike—forget the Plan B and burn the boats.

We offer this counterpoint: don’t burn the boats.

In fact, there’s an unappealing consequence to those early pilgrimages. Everyone dies.

What if, instead, leaders could have anticipated long winters and potential starvation. Resourcefulness might have called for further exploration of the Caribbean. The availability of citrus, coconut, plantain, and so much more might create the nutritional durability to carry your “teams” through long winters and drought.

Simply put, we don’t agree. Don’t burn those boats. Keep every tool and asset you can to keep every option open. Don’t throw away valuable resources.

Pivot when you must.
